..USA Today http://atu.ca/75f68 broke the news that next
week’s issue of Amazing Spider-Man will feature Spider-Man
and President-Elect Barack Obama teaming up in a five-page
story. Half the print run will feature an Obama cover by
Phil Jimenez.

And even though we’re still six days away from the book’s
release, it’s already popping up on eBay:

Wow, anything to sell comics. Not the appearance of Obama, but
leaking it to the press. Presidents have shown up fairly often in
comic books. Is this really newsworthy (for the media, I mean, not
the original poster)?

Like his press conference speech today, he's going to through a lot of ideas out there and see what sticks!

I may be misremembering but didn't the press make a big deal out of
the Clinton's appearance at Superman's funeral back in the 90s? I
think these things make the news because they don't have anything
better to do.

Just last year, the British Prime Minister's unremarkable role in Captain
Britain and MI-13 as "baffled authority figure who authorises the team"
was presented in the British press as "Marvel make Gordon Brown a
superhero!"

I remember a Reagan cameo in the Avengers.
Eros just had joined the team and it was suggested to him (by Cap?) that he
should choose a code name because Reagan was conservative and might find a
name like 'Eros' offensive (something like that).
Eros was surprised by this (that the other Avengers had secret identities)
and ended with the code name 'Starfox'.

Oh, I know there have been lots of cameos from probably every
president since the advent of comics...and many from before (my
favorite has to be Teddy Roosevelt in Tales from the Bully Pulpit) but
that Clinton appearance in Funeral For a Friend was the only one I
remember the press making a big deal about...that and the comic one
shots devoted to the presidential candidates that came out a few
months back.

Didn't Richard Nixon kill himself in the pages of Captain America when
confronted with his crimes? (The crimes of being the secret leader of
the Secret Empire, of course).

If so that would have been an extremely controversial comic I think.

It was because it coincided with Watergate. The comic I described was
Captain America #175 dated July 1974. The following issue had Cap
abandonning his costume and becoming Nomad (the Man without a Country)
because he was disillusioned with the US Govt. The comic was very
contresverial and Marvel denied links to Watergate, by claiming that the
story started a year earlier.
